Album Review: Fall Out Boy Go EDM/Trap For “Mania”

For Mania, Fall Out Boy have matched their core sound and infused it with EDM and Trap influences. A smart move considering there is no genre that embraces the manic of humanity quite like the Electronica world. We are all about beat-drops and rising synths, which matches well for a band that always loves ornate sonics to match their decorative lyrics.
Fall Out Boy – Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)

Fall Out Boy has always been a group that spruced up the complexity of sound and sentiment. They have no qualms changing the tempo or twisting the tone of a track mid-way. “Champion”, “Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea”, “Church”, and “Young and Menace” are amongst my fave tracks for their ability to fuse Fall Out Boy’s pop-punk nature with an electro-rock chaos. This album is certainly dramatic, which most Fall Out Boy albums are, except this one feels unabashed. Again, this is a band that loves to orchestrate music, and create elaborate spectacles, of which Mania feels like they have upped the loudness and overall darkness they have always pandered. Now more than ever, Fall Out Boy is singing to not conforming, but also choosing to be nothing rather than normal.
Fall Out Boy – HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T

It may seem like dark choice; I rather be no one than like everyone. Yet, in perspective, the choice to be “everyone” is the choice to be no one. “Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)”, “HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T”, and “The Last Of The Real Ones” literally follow each other on the album, and amp the record’s overarching message that being different is the start of humanity, and not the end of it. Our differences are what build the richness of our spiritual value, and Patrick Stump has the perfect voice to roar this message. He sings like a lion facing the sun; a king acknowledging that there is a bigger power to the universe. Add on that Pete Wentz always manages to create verses that hugs “the outcast”, and Mania, Fall Out Boy’s seventh album, proves that good bands can really last in this industry.
