Album Review: Moonrise Nation Show Fear And Love Are What Makes A “Glamour Child”

Nowadays, everyone is discussing what this world needs. Love? Peace? Compassion? Kindness? Yet, what about magic? What if what the world needs, including these virtues, derive from a need to spark imagination. Moonrise Nation;s Glamour Child is their attempt to add magic to this world through music.
Moonrise Nation – Common Fear

Fear is a powerful emotion, and not many artists like Moonrise Nation try to approach with such a layered sound and perspective. While music, usually speaks of self-doubt and anxiety, Moonrise Nation go straight for fear as a gaping, universal sentiment that trickles down into individual relationships, paths, and identities. In essence, if Love is treated like an entity to revere in nearly every song, then Moonrise nation have created an album to refute Fear as its antagonistic, opposite energy. Not many like to see fear as powerful or cosmic as love, but tracks such as, “Eye to Eye” and “No Harm” show that like, light and darkness, fear and love can be as potent as the other in moving and making people. In songs, “Common Fear”, “Petty Games”, and “Seasick”, the trio mash indie folk and pop as if they were in a food grinder, and all that scares persons about life were added for seasoning. Instrumentally, despite the “terror”, Moonrise Nation has an easy vibe to their music/ arrangements that subtly quickens pacing to show the jittering rush that is concern or dread. When panic strikes, it can be as piercing as love, which is why Emma, Arden, and Eva sings songs with a silken humility. You can caress their vocals and meekness for how evokes “Snow” and “Glamour Child” like wondrous spells meant to foster inner strength.
Moonrise Nation – Glamour Child

Whether it be through harmonies or lyrics, Moonrise Nation uses their music to contextualize and dissect every versus a human being goes through with either his or herself, or others, to feel fulfilled. Thus, my love for Glamour Child is that it truly shows you “glamour” only comes from those choosing to be love despite having fear. While most of us think that you cannot have fear to be love, it is quite opposite. You are love because, even with fear, you choose to be good or, in their case, magic.
