Album Review: Okay Kaya Will “Watch The Liquid Pour Itself”

Not gonna lie! I fell in love with Kaya Wilkins when I watched one of my favorite “horror” films: Thelma. There was a quiet elegance to her presence; exuding a calm grace that made me very curious as to who was Okay Kaya. Color me surprised when I heard her newest album, “Watch The Liquid Pour Itself” and found it sound like Mitski and Thelma decided to create a song.
Okay Kaya – Baby Little Tween (Official Video)

Mitski is my cowgirl of sonic wonder, and Thelma, the character, is a symbol of restrained power and bursting lust. Both women speak to the awakening passion that can stir, in a woman, who has been tamed and tampered with from foreign forces: whether it be men that don’t love her or women that don’t “see” her. Something about wanting to have the “real” you be visible and loved, especially by someone you SWEAR you see as “real” can be both intoxicating and intimidating, which are two dynamics to Okay Kaya’s record. She is, simultaneously, enamored and withdrawn from the power of a woman genuinely and sexually pleased.
Okay Kaya – Ascend and Try Again

From “Asexual Being” to “Mother Nature’s Bitch” this album, sonically, feels like shadows and mirrored lights are dancing with each other. To be frank, Okay Kaya’s video for “Psych Ward” perfectly surmises the strange beauty and intelligence of this record. It is a track by track play of what it is to really want the world or someone fulfill you and consistently find that’s not happening. Thus, Okay Kaya’s voice comes out sweetly sardonic; embracing lyrics like they are apples whose juice is more sour than what she’d like. After all, unrequited  dreams and untapped lust can really leave you with a sense of thirst. For More Information On Okay Kaya  And To Buy Watch The Liquid Pour Itself Click Here.
