Album Review: Sam Fender Is My Bruce Springsteen

In music, as in life, everyone compares everyone. Some are valid and some….not so much. While we all compare, we also fear comparison; scared that being like someone makes us less special or burdened to be as great as they are. I 100% get Bruce Springsteen vibes from Sam Fender, and this generation needs a “The Boss.” In his debut, Hypersonic Missiles, Fender details how the world changes you as try to figure out how you can change the world.

Every song in this debut is fantastically vivid and raw. Fender becomes the voice of youth; showing that we are not vapid, dumb Instagrammers obsessed with documenting our “wellness.” While those people do exist, unfortunately, our generations defined by this stigma. Yet, tracks like, “The Borders,” “White Privilege,” “Play God,” and “Dead Boys” have him defending and exploring a generation that is fully exposed. Not only do youths know more, but we, as a society, know more about them. Nearly every teen and twenty-something has spent so much of their life on the Internet: showing what they do in their day to day while seeing what humanity has done throughout its entire existence. Yet, being “in the know” does not mean you have the tools to handle that knowledge, of which Fender feels like a guide and companion in trying to find them.

Sam Fender – Hypersonic Missiles

Like “The Boss,” Fender’s voice rakes in the fun madness and bursts of sadness that comes with wanting to live a full life but feeling like the world will end before you can. This is a sincere fear for rising generations. From gun violence to climate change, the odds are against us, and Fender turns these odds into songs that describe how wonderful it is to have friends, get lit, and forget that the world can be tragic. From “Saturday” to “Call Me Lover” or “Will We Talk In The Morning,” Fender’s voice rasps, roars, and relives what it is to maintain relationships in 2019. The battle to feel like it is worth it, and the rare moments when life shows you it certainly is and don’t FORGET IT!

From hooks to melodies, Fender’s album gives you Springsteen folk-rock; making you want to dance on a bridge or high-kick at a bar: two things I have done. Yet, it is not that he makes you “dance” as much as he makes your soul want to move from how invigorating he makes understanding. Any youth that hears Hypersonic Missiles will feel understood, and that is such a good, uncommon feeling. For More Information On Sam Fender Click Here.
