Album Review: Sheppard Herd The Flock Into Watching The Sky

Imagine you are a vibrant, rainbow colored seaweed floating through the ocean. That is what I felt like listening to Sheppard’s Watching The Sky. They literally made air feel like the ocean; both moving and protecting you as you figure out your love life’s fluidity. It is a luminescent effect for an album that feels epically electric.

There is a bigness to Watching The Sky’s production. Tracks like, “Love Me Now”, “Castaways”, and “Keep Me Crazy” feel like love parades. They make you picture Love waltzing down your street in a pink gown with a band of synthesizers asking you to give into love and enjoy the ride. We all have been guilty of either over-prepping for the worst or completely ignoring its possibility. To Sheppard, we strike balance when we, finally, decide that wrong and right turns are apart of every relationship, and, eventually, you decide whether to drive it home or drop it off.

From “Riding The Wave” to “Living For You,” Watching The Sky is infectiously joyous in impact because it makes Love feel exciting. Drums kick, guitars roll, and rhythmically float as Amy and George’s vocals soar like they are melodically singing to love through a bullhorn. Through “Edge of The Night”, “We Belong”, and “Call Me Up” the siblings harmonize as if they are cheering and chiming through a camp bonfire. Yes, I know I am using a LOT of happy references and images to describe this album, but it is because it makes you, literally, see Love in the most cheesy but wonderful way.
Sheppard – Riding The Wave (Lyric Video)

Often, we denote “cheesiness” as a lessening of something; as if to heighten something’s worth actually degrades it. We avoid silliness or sappiness because it does not seem serious enough, but Sheppard’s Watching The Sky seriously hugs love’s sappiness. I was giddy listening to this record that felt like sunshine as it played up to love’s cinematic appeal. Yes, it can go wrong, “Choke” or “Sorry”, but it also can go so right, and when that moment happens….. all the wrong fades away and leaves you Watching The Sky.
