Album Review: St. MARTiinS Brings Trop-Pop Flares To Being Young
While many believe in “soul-mates” according to love, I believe there is a “soul-mate” for other aspects in your life, particularly, creativity. A great example is Paul McCartney and John Lennon, who can be considered creative soulmates finding each other at a young age, and creating timeless hits despite personal friction. A more current example can be found in Katie and Mark the duo comprising ST. MARTiiNS, whom are releasing their debut EP bad w/ her.
The Scottish duo met in high-school, and have since maintained an artsy bond that goes beyond music to connect through poetry, photography, philosophy, and soundtracking. Hence, they would have a natural urge to make St. MARTiiNS; and electro pop force that uses summery synths, tropical keys, and sweet-pop drums to coat over lyrics that are all about being left out. While St. MARTiiNS, instrumentally, captures a Caribbean warmth, their lyrics show the coldness of being “bad art” or “othr grls”. You can surf from its rhythms that, despite digital inspiration, bring forth a wavy fun you would find in a nice, friendly day at the beach. Thus, I love their lyrical contrast of “darker tones” with the instrumental and vocal lightness of Katie. Her voice springs and sprights like its own, oceanic current rising through the relationship doubts and personal dares of “about u” and “9teen”. This duo capture that being young is fun because it is also a resilient state of being. For however lost you get or lonely you feel, there is a spark to youth that still believes or has more perseverance to assure tomorrow will be better.
