Album Review: The Internet’s “Hive Mind” Shows Love Is A Vibe
The Internet’s Hive Mind really does feel like your mind has become a hive; bees flying around, working together, to produce honeyed thoughts. In this vision “the bees” are the members of The Internet, but the listener is the “queen” they are serving.
Listening to Hive Mind, I kept on thinking of the word “fusion”. Its ability to span genres, something more artists are doing than ever, feels both symbiotic with and symbolic of the future of music. The Internet has grown in following because you cannot place them in any box, and Hive Mind furthers this happy “dilemma”. One minute you are dancing like you are Carnival to tracks like “Come Together” or “La Di Da” and the next you are catching some classic Aaliyah vibes in songs such as, “Mood” or “It Gets Better.” Naturally, the comparison comes through Syd’s supple, sweetening vocality that feels like ice melting over the most kissable lips. Such an evocative image feels natural for an album dedicated to the human heat filling relationships.

From the warmth of someone’s touch to the beauty of making love, a spiritual virtue, something owned in body and flesh, Hive Mind also shows that we should be like bees; they never question their mission and humanity’s purpose is to love. With this mentality, Matt Martians and Steve Lac’s vocals balance between spoken word and singing; fusing their poetical verses with a fluidity that feels too firm to be called sung but too rivered to be rapped. Moreover, tracks like “Beat Goes On”, “Bravo”, and ‘Look What You Started” prove psychological theories that music is a mood influencer.

Listening to “Stay The Night” and “Hold On”, when compared to the kick-drum love of “Next Time Humble Pie” or “Burbank Funk,” gave the album songs to put the lights down, draw the curtains, and settle that love lights the night. Overall, Hive Mind’s capacity to sonically transform itself shows The Internet know how transfer music into vibes, and emote passion through sound. The Internet’s Hive Mind Comes July 10.
