Album Review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra Question “Sex & Food”
Unknown Mortal Orchestra are known for their strangeness. They create rock n’ roll for the metaphysical more than the metaphorical. Yet, you cannot avoid using an image to describe what has no picture. In their newest album, Sex & Food, they delve into the deceptions of pleasures.
More and more musicians are giving their artistic interpretation on why America has chosen to fall from grace, of which UMO says, “Maybe, we were alway falling?” Tracks like, “American Guilt” , “A God Called Hubris”, and “Ministry of Alienation” move like different rooms in a factory. Some rooms are smooth such as “Rely On” and “The Internet of Love (That Way)”, and some are churning with metallic synth-waves that spin like nails loosening themselves, “Everyone Acts Crazy Nowadays” or “Chronos Feasts On The Children”. This image is strong both sonically and socially; we are acting like nails unhinging themselves, but only because what we have built as system that was not as strong as we thought.

UMO’s album is insightfulness served in subtle clarity, which is so refreshing. In a world, where people think they have to be loud or crazy to be heard, it is nice to see someone be artful and peaceful in their delivery. It proves that silence is the greatest sound. While, of course, this isn’t a silent album songs such as “Hunnybee” and “How Many Zeros” are like lo-fi, low volume funkadelia. Yes, they have swaying baselines that ignite mass two-stepping, but they give you an option: you can either dance or listen. When you listen, Ruban Nielson’s voice taps your brain like a finger on a desk; asking you to absorb the lessons/ challenges of today.

Nielson’s voice grooves like R&B depression; it is meant to move and sink you, all at once, which is why “consumption” is a perfect theme for Sex & Food. What we let in to our minds, hearts, and bodies are what forms our soul, and right now our soul feel shapeless like, an amoeba refracting frames according to its surroundings, but never receiving or transmitting information to build its own structure like, a neuron. For all that we take in, a lot of people are not absorbing or giving, and UMO’s Sex & Food is a brilliant display of why.
