Album Review: William Wild Is Doing “Push-Ups”
William Wild has a voice that makes you look outside a window and say, “Where did the time go?“ Exactly, what many are asking as we wonder what has become of the world and what will become after it? More importantly, what happens to people who already wondered where their life was going and if it would get better in the world we had? Things are changing and in William Wild’s new record, Push-Ups, he shows that your heart is the most important muscle to keep toned.

From “Holy Ghost” to “Middle America,” Wild sings as if he is driving through life in a Chevy Impala with his heart in the passenger seat and his guitar in the back. He writes his lyrics as if he has put his soul to the side to observe it like an orb floating before him: changing colors and shapes like one does moods and emotions. Wild’s Push-Ups completely captures the nomadic feeling most people, especially youth, feel on this earth. If life is truly precious and a one-shot deal, then, in a way, terrifyingly stunning. We have to go through so much to become who we want to be, and in tracks like, “Slow Records” and “Pictures,” Wild makes Time a bittersweet friend.

Have I mentioned that I love Wild’s voice? It is luxuriously casual; emoting notes like the trinkets he picks on the road of his life. This only furthers listeners to observe his sung verses as if they were written before them in a novel. You turn songs like you turn pages because Wild has a very Kerouac narrative to Push-Ups. Like On The Road, his characters/ lovers are big hearts with aims too cosmic to be concrete. After all, what does it mean to make happiness a goal when your friends are gone or funds are low? For Wild, lyrics are the philosophies you put over rhythms; they are the hard questions you ask yourself over a melody to soften the blow. William Wild’s Push-Ups Comes Out March 20.
