Album Review: Wolf Parade Triumphantly Returns In Cry Cry Cry
Wolf Parade’s Cry Cry Cry should be called Drama Drama Drama, and I love it. Soaring choruses, rousing anthems, sprawling guitars and chaotic keys make the record feel like a labyrinth of sound, but can you handle it? I ask because Cry Cry Cry is a sonics dance with tension, danger, and pure exhilaration.
Wolf Parade – Valley Boy
Their first album in 7 years, Wolf Parade have gone out of their way to show their excellence has been missed, but also their thoughts, as well. “Lazarus Online”, “Incantation”, and “Am I An Alien” are all unorthodox opuses for every beating heart combating the world’s growing, machined nature. Yes, tech has taken over the world, but so has the world’s penchant for darkness. From raging against systems to one’s own spirit, Cry Cry Cry seems to be an album for the man that knows sadness but still has hope for hope. Restlessness seems abound in Dan Boeckner ’s voice e he is running through a nightmare that goes from epic “Valley Boy” to the mysterious jungle of sound “King of Piss And Paper”. Every track is frolicked by guitars and dread that are only densified through Boeckner’s emphatic vocals, which amp his lyrical desire to feel empathy. As I said, Wolf Parade are going for the nuance of hoping for hope. No matter how hard a bass bumps, a drum bashes, and a melody blazes, Cry Cry Cry shows rage stems from a sincere, but denied yearning for peace.
Wolf Parade – You’re Dreaming
How ironic that we usually self-destruct because we do not feel still? How strangely befitting that humanity usually turns to hate because it does not feel loved? Cry Cry Cry shows the extreme of emotions lead to the extreme of actions; an obvious, symbiotic relationship that goes ignored. From “You’re Dreaming” to “Who Are Ya”, Wolf Parade have returned to teach you to dream about dreaming is the first step/ permission to healing.
