Concert Review: Alex Cameron Is A Twisted Elvis At Rough Trade NYC
I remember watching “Dracula” films, and wondering in creeped fascination why every person would be so “taken” with him. From literal hypnosis to supernatural charm and demeanor, he would nab his followers and keel their willingness to walk with him forever into nightfall. As Alex Cameron shaked his hips and glared at the crowd with a set of eyes that said, “I will devour you”, there was something vampiric to his Rough Trade show that made people gravitate toward him like, a twisted, dark version of Elvis, i.e. “Dracula”. He is here to suck up your attention, glamor you with his eccentricity, and provide you with a memorable night.

I am enthralled by Cameron as a performer because he is both charismatic and completely present in what it is to feel fragile. Song after song such as, “Happy Ending”, “Marlon Brando”, and “True Lies” were microscopes wrapped in 80’s inspired synths and pointed at the soul of a man fearing he has become devout to loneliness, toxicity, and plain self-doubt. Hence, why Alex Cameron appeared so coolly vampiric to me; for being an artist with the capacity to draw a crowd for its sentiment, his songs were dedicated to the struggle we have to grapple with them. Sanity is not an easy thing to keep, despite popular belief. Every day people have instant where they SWEAR they are going to “lose it”, or they have trials that push them to the very brink of happily giving their mind into nothingness. With that notion, Cameron pushes his songs like they were written in the edge of derangement. He spreads and contorts his body as if to prove that singing may be spiritual in feeling, but it is, technically, a physical action, which he completely amped. Even know I smile at how his body moved and gyrated with a seriousness that made you admire how present Cameron is in his persona. He is GIVING YOU what you came for: an hour journey into the imbalances we confront when we do not know how to love better. From ourself to someone else, tracks like, “Stranger’s Kiss” and “Take Care of Business”, were the sonic philosophies of Alex Cameron’s sincere clutch to clarity in a world that could make the most loving person hate themselves.

I really like Alex Camron: plain and simple. Entering Rough Trade, I did not know what to expect or have any particular loyalty to a track. I was a blank canvas for him to paint impressions and mold colorful thoughts, of which he did! With a voice that billows and bellows as if his verses were tearing him apart, his dramatic flare for emotional honesty made him one of the most distinct acts you could have the pleasure to remember.
