Artist Close-Up : Larkin Grimm Show The Beauty And Bitterness of “Chasing An Illusion”
Chasing An Illusion may sound like what I do everyday, but it is actually the fantastic new album of Harlem songstress, Larkin Grimm. With a voice that howls at and heals you simultaneously, Grimm appears like a wolf throughout tracks fierce, hungry, and, if kind to her, deeply and loyally protective. This aura makes her run and prowl through her album as if it really were a forest of illusions trying to prove that if you “look the part” you can say “you are it”.
The whole point of illusions are that to create a vision of reality you wish without having to do the work to make them real. “Fear Transform Into Love”, “Beautifully Alone”, and “A Perfect World” capture the disillusioning nature of believing that “fake it till you make it” is a solid strategy to approaching life. You can only see through the looking glass of life for so long until you have to smash it and actually go beyond “the display”. Lyrically, that is what Grimm does in every track. She strips away fantasies through vast, gorgeous stringed instrumentals that seemingly pluck into their flesh, bones, and earthly roots, again, like a wolf. From “On The Floor” to “Chasing An Illusion” she bites and beams her vocals with a soulfulness that stems straight from the soil of the earth. If she needs her notes to be as clear as water or hard as a rock, she does it, because pure, spiritual ferocity comes form going beyond the battle of fear vs love to the balance of it. You can have your dreams and your reality, but to survive life, you need to make sure that both share and equal part in your heart. For More On Larkin Grimm And To Buy Chasing An Illusion Click Here.
