Artist Close-Up: Lowell Shows The Complexity of Being A Lone Wolf
When you think of a lone wolf, there is something dirty, fearless, sad, but dangerous about this creature. You can imagine them going through snowy terrain deciding whether to find its pack, form one, or accept that alone has its independent perks. In Lowell’s Lone Wolf, the pop-rock singer shows that lone wolves can journey the farthest.
I said it with Flatbush Zombies, and I say it again with Lowell, success is lonely. People can inspire and help you to achieve your best, but you do it on your own. Yet, when you deeply love someone, it is hard to see that the love and victory you should have for yourself is separate. Such an idea runs through tracks, “War Face”, “Cut The Cord”, and “No Talk” as Lowell sings to an overarching feeling that it is time to define happiness according to herself. Even tracks like, “Bitter Rivals” and “Ghosts” shows how the pain you shared with another person can still confound your ability to make and keep your own, individual identity.
For better or worse, we tie ourselves to others, and Lowell’s soundscapes play like ropes dragging, lassoing, and grabbing various genres. She has no problem combining acoustics with a digital backdrop to emanate her confusion: how could the love you have for others not equate loving yourself? From “Vegas” to “Wintersleep”, Lone Wolf sounds like a fantasy; using magic in its melodies to empower Lowell’s voice. Her vocality can go from winded in yearning to belted in affirmation, which only proves that humanity is a seesaw of emotion. You hear Lowell’s scintillating, ranging voice in the punk-pop “Bang Bang”, and you would think no one would ever shoot down her voice, but then you hear the lyrics and know that is what she is confronting.
Lowell may have a “sweet” pop voice, but she is making music that chisels at the bitterness and sourness of love’s candied perception. A Lone Wolf may want a pack, but if he or she does not protect herself, she cannot guide others to do the same. For More Information On Lowell and Lone Wolf Click Here.
