Artist Close-Up: Mr. Sanka Gives A Tropical Feel To A “Gallon Of Nostalgia

Everyone needs a song to get you in the mood, but the mood doesn’t have to be of any active nature. There are moments when you want to chill, but still feel like your mind is listening and learning about something. Mr. Sanka’s “Gallon” is for that moment when you want lie down, and let music do the thinking for you.

It is no surprise that Mr. Sanka’s Gallon has a slightly tropical feel with a bass that kicks like one’s foot off the dancefloor. Why is it no surprise? Because when you base your band’s name off a “cool Runnings” character, I can get a feel for where you are going with your style; of which “Gallon” is a mix of relaxation and remembrance that most tropical music inspires. The Caribbean’s image is built on the idea of a place you long to be in and recall because it is the only one where work is an aside, sun is a must, and life is a primary focus. “Gallon” captures that feel through the higher register of lead singer Nick van Hofwegen, whose smooth, easy fluidly joins with the instrumentals of London-based producers Mus and Murray. The irony is that in hitting the notes of nostalgia and ease of the tropics, you might miss that Gallon’s lyrics are kind of tragic.

Mr Sanka – Gallon

“Falling into a black-hole”, losing a “gallon of blood”, and repeating “I don’t remember” are not phrases of happiness compared to how good this song makes you feel. For Mr. Sanka, “Gallon is about how quickly life can seem to move at times. While we do our best to live in the moment, sometimes those moments seem to fly by. Gallon is a wish to retain some of the memories, the simpler moments, which seem fleeting over time.” A poignant truth for a song that is so “feel good”. For More Information On Mr. Sanka Click Here.
