Artist Close-Up: Kid Kenn Is A Bougie Fellow
Kidd Kenn is black, gay, and proud. Problem? Welp, for some there is a problem, which is why watching Kidd Kenn, I kept on thinking of how I grew up in the BX. In our neighborhood, as a black man, being gay was not always regarded with “pride” or “respect, which made life for one of my best friends hard. He had to be really strong and ready to fight a lot of people going out of their way to make him feel like a walking joke. Yet, Kidd Kenn’s music has the last laugh.
Kidd Kenn Ft. Queen Key – “ERIOD” Directed By ChiMarley Visuals
Lyrically, Kidd Kenn’s music ousts the “DL’s” and comes for any ratchet loser trying to act like Kenn does not know how to defend himself. He can out-petty the best, which makes his music ignite in you your inner “truth-teller;” the person inside that will not allow themselves to be wronged. Instead, that person is going to crack open like the Book of Revelations and tell everyone some final, fiery truths about themselves before we all go. We all need that person within us, and some people never had the option to NOT be that person.
As a performer, Kidd Kenn approaches the stage like he has something to say. His rap style feels divided betweens coals and diamonds; splashing lyrics of self-aggrandizement with willingness to tear those that see him as less. Naturally, people loved it because they understood it. Everyone in The Delancey/ the world, at least once, has had to go David on an attempting Goliath. Kenn makes those instances fun, of which he strolled back and forth on the stage as if his own music made him bounce. The result was a show that empowered any proud Bougie Fellow or Gal.
