Diandra Interviews Los Rivera Destino: Sincerity & Consistency In Music

I loved interviewing Los Rivera Destino. They really are three guys that have been trying, for years, to a hit a music stride, but it was a cover and a duet with Bad Bunny that helped their career really sail. From giving them a “bolero” idea where they fall in love with a woman named “Marijuana” to discussing father appreciation, friendship oozed from their responses.

Diandra: What about Reggaeton did you feel was “bolero” material?

Antonio: I think more Trap has “bolero” because there is a melancholic sense to the material.

Fernando: We translated some of songs based on the feeling. If you have a song about heartbreak it can be bolero, if you have a song about weed it can be Reggae, and if you have a trap song about dancing you can turn it into a rap song.

Carlos: There are songs that translate better to certain genres. We have a lot of punk-rock and Reggae songs so whatever comes to us, we will do it. It really depends on the song.

Diandra: What attracts you to melancholy?

Fernando: I think the sincerity of the lyrics. That is what attracts us: the sincerity of the heart.

Antonio: I think, usually, the best songs are about heartbreak. They are always my favorite.

Carlos: Personally, I like fun songs, but I think as long as a song is sincere then it is good. I think fun comes from the heart. It makes me want to go out.

Diandra: I think sad people love fun songs and happy people love sad songs.

Carlos: (laughs) Yeah sure!

Diandra: I also think you should do a bolero about weed like, call it “Marijuana” and then allude to how you love weed through how you love her.

Fernando: That is actually a really good idea. We might do that.

Diandra: Please cite me as inspiration! (they laugh)…… (I didn’t)

Te Boté (Versión Bolero) – Los Rivera Destino

Diandra You started covering Reggaeton after Hurricane Maria. How do you feel this human catastrophe changed you as artists?

Carlos: We had no work. We did not have shows. We had a song, and, because of Maria, we couldn’t play it or do promotion. We wanted to do something.

Fernando: We wanted to make extra money. We were broke, and we wanted to travel and get new gigs. So after Maria it pushed us to find new ways to push and explore our music. We are best friends so, before Maria, we were hanging out and really seeing each other for practices, but then, when Maria hit, we were checking up on each other and our families. It was not until 6 months later we decided to start doing music again. Then, we decided to do more music that is complex and with Puerto Rican influences.

Diandra: How do you feel a flower, which is usually tied to women, represents a man?

Fernando: Everyone is the same. Everyone has feelings and can be strong. We laugh. We cry. We scream. A flower can represent a man because a man has sentiments. Moreover, the flower has always been apart of our logo so our song was really about pushing that concept further.

Carlos: I think women and men are equal. We are all vulnerable and delicate, and our choice of a flower represents that.

Los Rivera Destino feat. Benito Martínez – Flor (Official Video)

Diandra: In honor of “Flor,” what did your fathers teach you about how to be a better human being?

Fernando: My dad always taught me to confront things. Never run away. Face issues head on.

Antonio: My dad taught me empathy. Never judge people or persecute people with your decisions. If you don’t think of others in your choices then you can become a monster.

Carlos: My dad taught me to be vigilant. Not everybody has the best intentions for me or is worth trusting. You always have to be conscious of others and their intentions so that you are always ready.

Diandra: I always ask artists’ what they feel music has taught them about love?

Fernando: I think love has so many manifestations. “Flor” is about paternal love. Our song “Mariposa” is about love at first sight. We have worked really hard in transmitting and transferring Love into our songs with sincerity. We don’t want to fall into cliches so we try to put our heart and it experiences with it. We always try to manifest love with honesty because we feel that is what attracts people, especially Latinx whom are such a passionate people. We know when someone is lying about love.

Antonio: I think love is consistency. The first love of your life is your mom. You call your mom all the time. It is about giving love so as to receive it. Even when we fight, there is love. We laugh all the time, and, in that, there is love. It is a love of friendship.

Carlos: I like that you used the word consistency because it is like you love a person because they are consistent but you are consistent because you love that person. It is a cycle.

Dura (Cha Cha Cha) – Los Rivera Destino

Diandra: Final Question! What can you say about the upcoming album?

Carlos: There are going to be a lot of collaborations. It is going to be original music and it is something we have worked on since forever. This cover thing is new, and I laugh because we used to judge so much people that only did covers. Now, this is about doing originals.

Fernando: Our next song is a Bossa Nova and a collaboration with a Venezuelan artist. Another addition to our collection.
