Artist Close-Up: Laufey Is Typical of Me And You

Confession! I love Spring! While I adore Summer, I love the excitement of Spring. The weather gets warm enough to put on a light coat and a nice dress, and everyone is blossoming at the anticipation of a Hot Girl Summer and a few weekend getaways. Laufey’s music feels like Spring. Her new EP, Typical of Me, feels like a garden of colorful tulips enjoying the gentle breeze of stringed arrangements.

From “I Wish You Love” to “Best Friend” place you in the mood of looking outside a window, with a warm of cup of Joe, and the sun blooming through to recall memories of really great days in your life. Sometimes, I wonder if life is a Happy or Sad or this weird blend of Happy/Sad. Laufey captures that wonder through a voice that feels lightly deep. There is a richness to her tone that fogs through notes like a cloud hugging a rainbow; she manages to be shiningly colorful while also heavy and misted. I love that dynamic because it makes her songs come off like the tracks of a young woman that has lived a thousand lives.

One of the my favorite singers of all time is Joni Mitchell. As a songwriter, she was exceptional at making life feel timeless; as if you could look back on a memory or an old lesson you learned and it could feel new to you because you have a new lens. Her songs grow with you, and Laufey has that talent. “James,” “Like The Movies,” and “Street By Street,” roll through like a nice, quick stroll through the eternal Spring of being a young woman. No matter what generation, we fall in love, have our heart broken, and sit around looking at others and our own lives to wonder: what does this whole “life thing” even mean? Laufey may not know the meaning, but she makes the music for those trying to figure it out.
