Concert Review: Alice Merton Has CHANGED At Bowery Ballroom

I remember the first I saw Alice Merton. She was at Baby’s All Right, and felt completely accessible. She, literally, strolled from the street unto the stage. While she is still as friendly and chatty about her music, she has CHANGED and for the better. At Bowery Ballroom, I felt like she had revealed the star she always was, and gave the crowd the leading front-woman we knew she could be.

I want to ELABORATE that Alice Merton has never been a bad or poor performer. On the contrary, to get better you need to have a foundation of good. Yet, this time around Alice had more to her benefit. She had more space, a bigger band, and did not have to work extra or even play an instrument to set up her performance. All she had to do was stand center and sing, which may seem easy to you, but not everybody can turn a verse into a virtue. The best singers are also actors, and know how to turn up an emotive, even theatrical displays of their tracks, which Alice did. From “Trouble In Paradise” to “Lash Out,” she used her backstories and physicality to emote her heart.
Alice Merton – No Roots

I know we all have been through heartbreak, but there is a genuineness and spiritual growth to Alice Merton when she talks about her career/ personal hiccups. She speaks and sings as if her pain is in a crystal ball that can make clear to her the past. Thus, she observes the wrongs of her life with enough distance to turn them into wisdom. This allows her to be a FIERCE, rocking front woman with echoes of Gwen Stefani. From her romper-fashion to how she contorted her hands and body, I felt like I was watching 2018 No Doubt’s reincarnation. Thus, I found laughable that ANY RECORD LABEL would doubt or try to alter the swag/sound she offers. Yet, the ferocity of Alice Merton is that she independent, and her music is a swift kick for you to be it, as well.

When people keep closing doors on you, then go get some wood and nails and build your own one. That is what Alice Merton did, and it payed off with a sold-out show. The crowd literally bathed and basked in her vocals that felt even more empowered and confident than the last time I saw her. From “No Roots” to “Hit The Ground Running,” everything about her star power felt amplified, and proved how qualified she is to carry it. For More Information On Alice Merton Click Here.
