Concert Review: ALMA TURNS UP Public Arts NYC
It is hard not to gush at my Alma concert experience. This Finnish star turns her concerts into club experiences where you are required to dance. “YAS KWEEN!” laced the air as people entered pop-up twerk-offs. Yet, I should have expect such a fun, exhilarating concert experience when one of her literal lyrics is “I Am The Bonfire!” If you are calling yourself a bonfire of a human being then you have to back it up and she does.
With her younger sister as backing vocals and best friend as DJ, Alma has a triumvirate supporting her rule, and a set up that she is the concert you go to with the people you most love to make a memory you will most laugh at. Her personality and presence is a tour-de-force that commands you to give in to her adrenaline, and her voice is distinct in its pillowed range and message. Friends grabbed each other and sang in full voice tracks like, “Karma”, “All Stars”, “Chit Chat” and “Legend”. These songs, in particular, felt important to proving the mass appeal of Alma. While many artists sing to being gods amongst mortals, for Alma, being mortal is being godly.

Alma has some of the most relatable lyrics that talk about being broke and feeling broken, but still having enough strength to have a fun and being invincible for one night. It was a sentiment that her sold out crowd understood. While a lot of musicians play to the Top 1% lifestyle of having so much wealth you could pop a bottle of Cristal to simply pour it out, most of us are just trying to find a beer on sale. Yet, Alma makes that beer feel like Cristal. From “Dance For Me” to “Fake Gucci”, there was non-stop dancing and joy because somebody was playing to us for us. After all, anyone can be a legend, but they have to inspire everyone to do it.

I knew that Alma was going to rise and rise when I left the concert, and felt that the only one I could hear to keep my mood was her. That is a powerful gift; to make yourself the only version of yourself. #nocopies #onlyoriginals No other artist could provide her unique level of “Good Vibes” and good times. She reminded me, oddly, of the Spice Girls; giving fierce, colorful empowerment to everyday people and soundtracking some of the happiest memories of your life.
