Concert Review: Amy Shark Show The Struggle And The Strength Are Real At Mercury Lounge

I have long liked Amy Shark’s music, especially lyrically. She encompasses the Millennial experience of feeling completely hopeless, but mustering enough “spiritual troops” to do a fun pub crawl with friends. Being young is not easy, and as her songs “Weekends”, “Blood Brothers”, and “Drive You Mad” showed, holding on is, sometimes, the best thing we can do while we wait to see if or when we “move up”.

First, Shark’s personality is HILARIOUS! I laughed so hard with bitter humor, She is incredibly sarcastic, and presents her songs like she is Jerry Seinfeld building to a punchline, Yes, I just compared her to Jerry Seinfeld, but in comes on the heels of her off-cutting, off the cuff explanation for her songs. Like “Middle Of The Night” , where she said, “For this song, pretend that you are in a room with someone you love, just sitting on the couch watching tele, and suddenly they put their hand through you and take your heart, throw it on the floor, step on it, spit on it, crush it, break it, kick it, and Yeah! that is how I felt writing this song!”. My reaction,”Well…… damn.” I cannot act like I had not felt like her AT ALL, but her candor was refreshing because even I “fluff” my emotions to sound prettier. Yet, like Flint Eastwood, music is not about being pretty as much as loud with the truth. Shark does not coy from being raw but also being strong. She proves that showing you care about the world, others, and yourself is something to be proud, and, ironically, she does not care about the fact that she cares, which is refreshing. She is nonchalant in a gym suit dancing around to her songs that are counter the “No F**Ks Given” mentality that has swept the world. For her, everybody cares, and if you say you do not, it is because you are so hurt and bitter, you rather pretend to be numb. Instead, Shark is learning how to deal with how open her heart is, and she has the crystallized voice to do so.
Amy Shark – Weekends

Vocally, Shark is clear and concise like, an arrow hitting perfect notes. Her cover of “Superman” by Eminem was simply amazing, and brought out the brokenness that undercurrents this lustful track. Such a capacity makes sense as, ultimately, Amy Shark is a pop-rocking songstress that embraces the perseverance it takes to ride through your fragilities, and still wake up the next day to do “the same”. As she ended her show, she got sentimental, and claimed that a few months before she was stuck at a 9 to 5, and readying to give up on this dream. Yet, there she was, at her sold-out show at Mercury Lounge. Beautiful! She, literally, is walking evidence of her music; holding on eventually leads to getting better.
