Concert Review: Another Sky Rises At Mercury Lounge
Another Sky’s music makes me want to melt into myself, in part, because Catrin Vincent’s voice is a strange beautySo often we believe strong voices are solely defined by a powerful range, but, for me, they are defined by their inherent distinction. What note you can hit become secondary to how you hit them. Vincent covers notes like a hand clutching a heart and letting each pump flesh into her verses.
GOD THAT VOICE! Androgynous might be a word used to describe the songstress, who has been vocally compared to Nico or Joni Mitchell. The comparisons arise for two reasons; the first being that her vocality contrasts notions of femininity, which Another Sky’s lyrics do, as well. For some, “femme” means “dainty” and dizzied by even the lightest hardship. Yet, “Avalanche,” “Apple Tree,” “The Cracks,” and “Brave Face” are the songs for someone not so easily torn but exhausted that life/ others still try to tear them . No one ever talks about how hard it is to be resilient, and it might be why we look at saints or heroes as if they are not human. We cannot imagine such strength within us everyday, but Another Sky show that, sometimes, the strongest thing you can do is wake up. This message would be nothing without Vincent’s voice and my second reason for the comparison; Another Sky is melancholically folkloric.
Another Sky – AvalancheFrom “Forget Yourself” to “I Don’t Hate You,” Another Sky builds the modern, Millennial fable. So many try to figure out why this generation is frustrated, but it is frustrated because it is treated as something to be figured. Thus, Another Sky’s acoustics explode like a treasure chest filled with dynamite and gold; much like this generation. We are filled with promise, passion, and pain, and Vincent’s voice wraps all three in her steady, straight-toned vocality. Match it with Another Sky’s exceptional, bombastic arrangements and you feel like you are listening to Patti Smith as the new front woman for Radiohead.
Another Sky – Apple TreeAnother Sky brings the confusion of being into their epic, imaginative sound, which is what “indie” or “folk” is supposed to do. If anything they grasp folk’s storytelling capacity, particularly in terms of human turmoil, and colorfully splash it with an electric soundscape. The result is a show that makes you watch sound as if it a light display, and hear Vincent’s voice as if it is your own. For More Information On Another Sky Click Here.
