Concert Review: Argonaut & Wasp Light Up Rough Trade

A set can do a lot for an artist. At times, having good music is only a step for a concert, especially considering the varying prices of tickets and how, as I always say, live shows have become the emotional breaks for people’s work week. Sometimes, all you need is an 18 dollar show to make you feel like you are worth 18 million, and Argonaut & Wasp certainly did that for Rough Trade.

The key to Argonaut & The Wasp’s magic is lighting. I felt like Speed Racer in that show. Flashes of rainbow brite seemingly zoomed over the audience, while the lights behind them formed a psychedelic tunnel of sorts. We were in an invisible car, Wonder Woman style, warping through colors over tracks like, “Monacillo,” “Paradise,” and “Composure;” each song emanating that if life is a ride, then you are your own seatbelt. Whether it gets crazy good or crazy weird, life is a journey and you are your stability.

Okay, that is enough wisdom for the day because, in truth, Argonaut & Wasp live up to the similar named greek legends that showed how smart life makes you through its adventures. Sure, the highs and lows of life give you strength, but they also give you awareness, of which lead singer Trey Schibli feels like a director more than a performer; moving himself and the audience through cinematic soundscapes. Personally, I like performers that are a little dramatic with how they pose their bodies, notes, and overall charm.

By the mere fact that they see every verse and instrumental as a position, Trey and fellow duo member, Theo Klein, step up amongst the many groups bringing back the 80’s retro sound. Maybe it was the balloons (lol!), but they made you feel like you were about to pull a heist rather than walk to work. Hence, why I state that Trey’s performance is inherently dramatic and exciting; to make their sound work, he needs to act like every song is a step closer to the 18 million dollars in the vault. Thus, the audience was ready to go Wolf of Wall Street, and turn their night into an insane yacht party thanks to his voice.  For More Information On Argonaut & Wasp Click Here.
