Concert Review: Beast Coast Tear Up Pier 17

It is not without irony that the same day David Koch died, Beast Coast performed an EPIC show at the Rooftop At Pier 17. I once noted, in my Flatbush Zombies review, that they were Mitch McConnell’s living nightmare. Beast coast is, definitely, a Koch arch- nemesis. They are cool, young, and successful black men that sing to legalizing drug culture, advancing social justice, and openly having sex and getting lit without ANY SHAME. Such messages could send a thousand Kochs to the grave, but, that night, it sent hundreds/ to thousands to an NYC skyline.

I love Beast Coast. For me, they feel like the live-action, Hip Hop version of the “Monstars.” If you are not a Space Jam connoisseur, then you must be a Koch. In Space Jam, the Monstars created the INCREDIBLE “Hit Em High, Hit Em Low” anthem that slapped so hard, you could not believe that A) it was a Looney Tunes film B) that they lost to a duck with a lisp and a bunny with a first name called “Bugs.” IMPOSSIBLE!  Yet, the important note of this reference is that it brought together a slew of Hip Hop greats such as Method Man and LL Cool J to spit rhymes. In the same fashion, Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliott, Pro Era’s Joey Bada$$, Nyck Caution, Kirk Knight and CJ Fly  have joined to be our modern Monstars; spitting rhymes over basslines that are so heavy, you would think they were trying to shake the city’s floor for any buried sins. From  “Left Hand” to “Christ Conscious, “Beast Coast could have cracked concrete and left the world haunted and freed by its truths. They are the essence of “No F**KS Given,” but not for what you think. I said it with Thunderpussy and I’ll say it for Beast Coast, we live in a world where a man could dedicate his entire life to making sure others do not have, but let an artist drop an “F**k” in a verse and publicly declare his love for weed, and, suddenly, we are having a “thoughts and prayers” forum. For their audience, Beast Coast was a cartoonish affront to very real and BORING hypocrisies. As each did aerial acrobatics while rapping, their presence prompted a generations of youth to ask, “Why “act” good when you can be cool?”

Being a “square” is not being a good person so much as looking like you ask for a “Holy Water on the Rocks!” when you enter a bar. Beast Coast are a middle finger to such notions, which is why they felt like Nirvana had a baby with A Tribe Called Quest and then that baby decided to marry God-Zilla. #freelove The result was a show that proved a concert is a bubble, and, if you are fierce enough as an artist, no societal needle COULD EVER BURST IT! Beast Coast is a culture and their fans are happily apart of it. For More Information On Beast Coast Click Here
