Concert Review: Bedstudy Teach Music At Elsewhere

When we look at the age 30, it feels torn between those that say it is the new 20 and those that feel its the spiritually equivalent of 50. In this world so much is happening that “starting over” seems scary, even to the young. At Elsewhere, Baldwin mentioned his turning 30 and starting new, but used Bedstudy to proved both really means starting you. At Elsewhere, Bedstudy presented an album that showed who they are is musically unique.

Led by vocalist Peter Baldwin, Bedstudy felt like an example of sound therapy. Not one instance, in their set, was quiet. Whether it was a sole, singular chord fizzing and fuzzing into the ambiance, they treated sound like a treasure chest that should never be closed. The result was a hidden, eternal quality to their set; truly feeling like you had taken one long, lasting breathe of music. Yet, with Baldwin’s  genius and voice, how could you not see that music is our soul’s oxygen?

There is a feeling that Bedstudy are very meticulous and measured musicians, especially  by the way Baldwin carries his notes and becomes a guiding force in the trio’s and audience’s response. From “Ø (Arms Away)” to “12” or “s_M00n,” he treats his notes like steps in a March for better. Yet, for Bedstudy, better is an intertwining term; as if the better an individual, the better his community, and the better his community, the better his society, and the better is humanity. Add this message into songs of love and a soundscape that made you feel like rhythm was actually electricity sprouting from the ground like poppyseeds, and Bedstudy truly embodies music as a mood changer.

As people swayed their heads and bit into their lips like Bedstudy’s music was salivating relaxation, the group, literally, made “Yeah!” feel like a proper, music category. All you wanted to do was say, “Yeah!” with the chillest excitement as they turned Elsewhere into a jazzy lounge. There you could sip a dry martini, and imagine a world where music was given more acknowledgement as a healer/purveyor of unity. For More Information On Bedstudy Click Here.
