Concert Review: LAMC/BMI Give A Verano Alternativo
In their LAMC/ NYC showcase, BMI Verano Alternativo presented the Latin Artists they believe will both dominate and innovate the charts. They were banking on these rising stars to scope the globe and represent our culture and our creativity. Latinx are everything, and, in that, our music is truly something.
Sebastian Otero has a very eased, poetical style. Spitting rhymes and singing verses as if his thoughts were connected to the dial of a burner. He would either turn up the heat for a twerk-fest or turn it turn it down for a romantic jest. Yet, no matter what, he appeared precise, purposeful, and eager to show the world his difference from swag to statement.
If Ana Tijoux and Natti Natasha, it would be Nohemy. She feels like spoken word songstress; planting her vocals with an aerial firmness. Her delivery is collectedly passionate like, a heart in a jar. This dynamic enraptured the crowd because Nohemy spoke to how, from love to choices, human being want to, simultaneously, be in motion and stillness. We want to go everywhere while salivating at the chance to have a moment alone, doing nothing, but admiring the ones we love.
I love Joan Camacho. He is so deep and his songs appeal to the person that lives in their head, but would love to come outside of it for the person they are dating. The hardest about being a thoughtful person is to decipher when you are being insecure and anxious. The lines between intuition and doubt become blurred during relationships, and Jona builds his songs like romantic epilogues from a man that figured this out.
Sophy Mell brings out the theatricality of pop music. The harmless fun that it is to imagine love and lust like a candy bag of rightful feelings. She is a future pop queen of Latin Music much like Becky G of Karol G. Just call her Sophy G! (lol!)
Cable Head is so weird and it works. His music is endearingly indie; transferring white noise into rock anthems, which makes them hypnotically moving. He is so specific in style and sound that he will find a following because, now more than ever, going “against the grain” is to go mainstream.
Cristna MOST DEFINITELY shows much promise because of the soulfulness in her voice. She plucks notes like they are gems she must digs from emotional soil. Hence, she uses her vocals like hands dusting away dirtied feeling and grimed thoughts that have made her believe love is not possible for her. Thus, she gives the crowd the “novela” of romance, which Latin Music fans will always make space for.
