Concert Review: Bülow Is Rocking My World At Terminal 5
I am such a fan of Bülow, in part, because, when I met her, she was one of those people that could strike a sincere conversation with anyone. She is such a warm heart that I bet even a wall would learn to talk just to chat with her. Thus, her music is so telling about the world and what it is to be young because, like most rising, pop stars, she sings to alienation.
Remember when pop was strictly about love? Or only had women singing to how much they loved men or how the man they loved was in love with someone else? How times have changed? Now, most songs are about self-loathing with many young women creating hit records off the fact that they feel like life is punching them in the soul. At Terminal 5, Bülow had as many people there to see her as they were to see Lauv. Her brief setlist was filled with sing-along tracks on how, perhaps, the coolest thing to be is uncool.
bülow – Boys Will Be Boys (Lyric Video)
Dressed in camo, with a bulky, multi-pocketed vest, Bülow looked like right after the show she was going to go kick Swamp Thing’s ass. If she had said she fights crocodiles as a side-gig, I would have believde her and I am not saying that facetiously or even as a a fashion comment. Yes, what you wear can be a reflection of what you mean, but, from “Get Stüpid” to “Sweet Little Lies,” Bülow’s songs sang to fighting the dirty, slimy creatures we call insecurities, whether they are handed to us or our own self-made monsters. Her casual, “going to war” vibe was so befitting for her sound and message, which told the audience to “fight back your demons and party with your angels.”
Again, it was a quick set or, at least, felt like it, which I loved because, once she was gone, it was hard not to miss her. She is making people want her to stay longer on the stage, have more songs to sing, and become an icon for those of us that feel like “fitting in” is a declaration of war that measures, literally, putting combat boots on.
