Concert Review: FKJ VIBES OUT TERMINAL 5

At Terminal 5, FKJ amped the idea of a DJ by also becoming a guru of sorts. His sound proves that the lighter you feel the harder you go. Moreover, his capacity to marry image, sonics, and vibe completely hypnotized the NYC crowd.

Yes, DJs do rely a lot on images and lighting, but what makes FKJ stand out is that he uses both like a masseuse of ambiance. It is as if you have entered his spa of sound, and you can decide which frequency will relax your body so you can dance like you don’t care. Not many DJs infuse a sense of peace and chillness to their sound. While, like everyone else, he aims for escapism and excitement, French Kiwi Juice (FKJ) understands that you have to feel good to get hyped. Thus, he switches from saxophone to guitars to an electric organ, and what felt like 100 instruments, to remind you that instruments are not just tools for expression; they are sonic choices of emotion.

As three screens splashed with imagery such as pictures of him playing instruments, nature, and other Detective Pikachu levels of color, the crowd was incredibly impressed. Vocally,  FKJ sandpapers his notes; smoothing them out until they become another notch on his  belted rhythms. Moreover, his DIY style and set felt like a live lesson on how to make a good beat, of which he could have stopped the show to give a Ted Talk on what it takes to make richer rhythms. He was building music like meals, and when Illioilili CAME OUT TO SING VIBIN OUT I can only describe my reaction as,

When I tell you that is my SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not lying! Also, Lianne La Havas singing “Unstopabble” was  the definition of FIERCE!  Still, my reaction relates to my point. FKJ is as much a musician and singer as he is a DJ, which is why he cannot fit into the latter title too easily. Yet, that is to his benefit as a performer, and why he does not just make hits as much as “your song;” the one you demand to be played while you are driving with your roommates to do groceries. Hence, at Terminal 5, we did not just meet an artiste of French House and NU Jazz music, we got a visionary of it; a man that is pioneering a new style in performance and arrangements.
