Concert Review: Calicoco Is A Night Owl In Bushwick

From Frankie Cosmos to Tomberlin, showing your heart beats like a crazy person seems like the most normal thing in music. Lately, I have being seeing a thread between artists that signify a change in the times. Music is not simply a reflector of where humanity is; it is also a predictor of where it is going. At Bushwick Public House, Calicoco proved we are going the right direction by opening our hearts.

Calicoco is rising in a time when many artists are unafraid to be complicated. They do not cower to saying how dark their mind can get, and they do not numb to the idea of getting lighter again. With this in mind, Calicoco played tracks like “Anchor Park” and “Night Owl,” and felt like the human embodiment of every person that has sat down and looked up. This may seem like a strange analogy, but every person, occasionally, stares at the ceiling or sky, quiets themselves, and goes blank; letting their mind say whatever it wants to say for better or worse. Calicoco takes those instances and put them into song.

Sonically, her chords feel like fingers repeatedly pressing into lyrics as if verses are actually buttons that need to be pushed to light up. Vocally, she feels sonant and cushy like her voice massages through emotional tensions. This helped tracks such as, “Until The Last Time” and “Who Knows,” turn your ears into puddy. Moreover, it set up Calicoco with a relaxed meekness. Her presence felt unpretentious and open; as if you could see, through her performance, when she sat on the sofa, picked up her guitar, and wrote every song.

I am really proud and hopeful for rising generations, and Calicoco is a good reason why. So often, the young are portrayed more for their vanity than their virtuosity or virtue. The truth is we are a mixture of both or, as Yoshi Flower puts it, we are a mix of “zen and ratchetness.” We like our finer things, but do want to be a fine/ good person, as well. Calicoco’s music approaches this paradox with sweet nuance, which is exactly how it should be. For More Information On Calicoco Click Here.
