Concert Review: Canada Represents At Summertage
Something is happening in New York that, probably, always happened, but, now, it feels more prevalent. FREE EVENTS! Yes, there is always “something” happening in New York, but this beloved, expensive city does HOOK UP its people, especially younger crowds. Thus, Summerstage has arrived to give you access to some of the HOTTEST Acts rising in the industry. Enter Alvvays at Ramsey Playfield.
With summer entering, the days in New York are longer so as to make the nights cooler. #theories With that being said, Summerstage, seemingly, had an “I Heart Canada” night with the presence of Ellis, The Courtneys, and Alvvays, of which the three have something very in common/ Canadian; they are super chill. Each has a way of approaching the stage and a crowd as if they are not a “stage and a crowd.” If public speaking is terrifying, I cannot imagine public singing feels easier, but to them it was like nothing; the equivalent to a casual, creative stay at a coffee shop with free WI-FI.

Summerstage is a concert series that, in a way, is elemental; making each outdoor show feel like an insular, particular ambiance. Walking away from the night, I, definitely, loved Canada more, but I also appreciated the dynamism of artists that are stilling. Alvvays’ music came off like surfing, dream pop opuses to being young and trying to be in love with that fact while dating. There is a misconception that being young is “problem-less” when, in truth, it is, actually, “solution-less.” You have a lot of issues and not enough “experience” or equity to easily jump over them. Thus, dating someone your age feels like asking two issues to unite (lol!). Still, from tracks like, “Dreams Tonite,” “One Who Love You,” and “Adult Diversion,” Alvvays played to how it is inevitable that we seek love and a “semblance of success” at any point of our life, even youth.

Personally, I love a voice that either can belt like a Aretha Franklin or relax like Jhene Aiko. Lead songstress, Molly Rankin falls into the latter category, which is why songs such as, “In Undertow” and “Not Your Type” are so vocally appealing. She is softly frustrated; coming off as simultaneously “cool and uncollected”, which seems to be the catch-phrase for younger generations. All in all, Summerstage made its audience feel like it had been packed into MHOW or Rough Trade; a Brooklyn spot that premieres young, rising talent. Such as effect was strange and incredible considering it was at the vast Central Park. For More Information on Summerstage Click Here.
