Concert Review: Coin

At Irving Plaza, Coin proved the irony of their name is that they sing to everything that matters beyond “the coin.” Instead, they provide a fun, danceable show that proves you buy the ticket, but the happiness comes for free. From “Simple Romance” to “Fingers Crossed,” Coin gave their sold-out show a perfect balance of spectacle and sentiment.

As a group, they pulse into their instruments as if they are their own music’s lifeline and meet the crowd in feeling exuberantly invincible and vulnerable, all at once. Lead singer Chase Lawrence embodies this dichotomy as he literally “spidermans” through the set. He leapt from the stage to the crowd to a tier near the balcony, and he did it all so that every person in that room felt as impressed by him as we was by them. This man loves an audience, which not every artist does, at least, so humbly and happily. Yet, he revels in the sing-alongs, the reaching out of hands, and the millions of phones that lit up to capture his every move.

COIN – Talk Too Much (Video)

“I Don’t Wanna Dance,” “Crash My Car,” and “Mailbu 1992” felt like pop gems as Coin represented everything we love about the “bubblegum” genre. We adore how it can simultaneously dramatic and lighthearted, and the group showed that it is for this reason pop-rock will never die. This genre can sing to heartbreak while making you want to leapfrog your body through the air, which pretty much everyone did as they heard tracks like, “Growing Pains” and “Talk Too Much.” Yet, it was songs like these and others such as “Hannah,” “Boyfriend,” “Cemetery,” and “Don’t Cry, 2020” that made me realize why pop-rock/ Coin attract the young. While, in image, we glorify being youthful, we do not, exactly, attribute depth to it, of which Coin does.

COIN – Simple Romance (Official Video)

That night, on earth, no one could outdo Chase Lawrence’s voice or inviting personality. He adds a cosmic earthiness to the zipping, bouncing melodies of Coin’s music; glistening his notes like a faraway star. Yet, this only furthers Coin’s music in transporting you to the sands of Jupiter or an all-inclusive stay at Atlantis: the Saturn location. Overall, there is something very light-hearted and sunny to Coin’s arrangements, particularly in concert, which makes sense. These guys’ songs believe that for however “fragile” you are, at the end of day, you carry your broken heart and keep dancing until it mends. For More Information On Coin Click Here.
