Concert Review: Cayucas Blow The Roof Off of Elsewhere
Get it! Blow the roof! Because their show was on the rooftop! Okay, well, Cayucas performed at Elsewhere’s Rooftop, and it was a moment when music met its perfect space. The duo’s sound does have a tropical flare; tapping into ear-waves like oceanic ones. Their light-headedness met with the sunny skies, and, like the sun, welcomed a night of cool air and cooler smiles.
It was so chill. This may sound like a basic description, but Cayucas’ music was meant for outdoor sessions with friends; ones where all you want to do is laugh, reminisce, drink a cocktail, and play king-sized jenga. They captured how the fun of summer is not that it “brings you out more” as much as it lets you go happily inward. Something about the the heat and brightness of both the event, and summer itself, showed that you are more forthcoming when you are happy. Thus, tracks like, “Real Life” and “Jessica WJ” adorned the open-aired space like streaming lights of rhythm.

There is nothing cheap about simple fun, and that is what Cayucas is, especially thanks to Zach Yudin’s voice. He is similar to Ezra Koenig in strolling his voice as is a song’s arrangements were born from a sandy beach. Every key and chord seems to happily grain and press under the steps of his voice to, again, create a dynamic of relaxed admiration. The “funness” of Cayucas as personalities and artists is that gratitude has a place in their work. They act and feel grateful for the audience, for the laughs, and the songs they have made to portrait a life that has been more good than bad.

My friend once told me that anyone look upon their past and turn it into a trauma series. We all can look back on our life, and, depending on perspective, see it as an ordeal more than an experience, but Cayucas truly see it as a journey of better. They arrange their verses and instrumentals to feel airy and shiny as if a song glistens to a person before a listen. The result is a show that could, easily, fit into a person’s day, even If they are seeing and hearing Cayucas for the the first time, which is a really good quality to have as an artist.
