Concert Review: Chastity Leaves The Chaste At MHOW
When I first saw Chastity, he was wearing all black and looked like a goth’s dream. Thus, imagine my surprise when he came out with some flannel, jeans, and a jacket that could have been worn by Foreman in that 70’s show. He had gone from the epitomized image of PUNK RAGER to a regular guy, and the latter felt more punk at MHOW.
In a way, punk-rock was a counter-culture bred on the idea to scare what we find scary: hypocrisy. It was made to challenge, in style and song, the CEOs that believe wearing a “snazzy,” harmless bow-tie to work everyday covers up that they steal millions from workers. In looking like an “average joe,” Chastity made rage average, which it is! Anger is apart of every human being, especially in this era, and Chastity makes yelling into a microphone feel like your heart venting.
He bashes his head as if he has no skull and roars into the mic as if he has no voice. He edges towards the stage as if his audience is a cliff he is contemplating jumping over. The stage becomes a rage room; a sonic, wrecking club where tracks such as, “Chains” and Children,” are sledge hammers smashing every bad thing that has happened to him. In the music world, heartbreak is, usually, only portrayed as scorning lovers. Yet, for many, their heart’s biggest crack of disappointed love comes from society. In his own way, Chastity represents that the biggest break-up you might ever endure is with life.
It may not seem like it, but we all break up with “our life” at some point. While we may not be able to walk away from society or life, itself, like we would an ex, we still leave behind our old ideas of it. We tear away an aged, kinder notion we held that life could be safer and lovelier, which why Chastity rocks the punk-rock stage. He uses his music to exemplify those that have walked away from chaste, innocent notions that being good gets you good.
