Concert Review: Childish Gambino Proves The Power of Time At MSG
If you think of your dreams like a stew you are cooking, you might forget that time is the most important factor to how it cooks. For all the ingredients you put in, it is how long they cook together that makes a true flavor. Deeming the night “Incredible!,” Childish Gambino marveled at his sold-out MSG show, and how so many people did not think he could warrant such success. Yet, as he said, “Time is the most forgotten ingredient.”
You don’t know where you will be tomorrow, and you, especially, do not know where others are going to be, as well. Yet, if you witnessed the amounting energy Childish Gambino gave is over 90 minute show, then you would concur he was going to end up at MSG. While the show has a spectacular production, using images and colors as if they were beats, as well, the show truly rides on Childish Gambino’s shamanic presence. No set could overdo his sheer adrenaline and joy at being in this moment, which is why he insisted, “Put down your phones, right now. This is a religious experience.” It truly was, and he had the notes to turn the dead back into the living.
Every time Childish Gambino sang, you knew he felt it. He relishes his notes, which is why tracks like, “Redbone,” Terrified,” “Riot,”and “Stand Tall” were like golden opportunities for him to revel his inner Al Green or Teddy Pendergrass. He revels in those funkadelic/romantic high notes that show even the hardest man can plead for Love’s Heaven. Moreover, he is giving James Brown/ Michael Jackson moves all throughout the show, which left the crowd enamored by how much he felt like an icon and example that perseverance can be rewarded. As people’s reactions played on the big screen, I was in awe to see women cry or men feel weak at having Childish Gambino give them a handshake.
Childish Gambino – Feels Like Summer
With “This Is America” and “Feels Like Summer,” Childish Gambino has inspired many to analyze the art of images and words, which is a major feat. For most of us, we are on a daily grind to survive, with such little reward, that interpreting the meanings and symbols of a music video might seem “too much.” Yet, Childish Gambino serves intelligence with such a vigor and vivacity that he makes thinking about this world feel unburdening. Still, from “Summertime Magic” to “Sober” or his new songs, the night was a reminder that for all Childish Gambino wants you to think better and more, he really does want you to laugh, have fun, be wild, and remember you are a living spirit.
