Album Review: Noname Brings Us New Philosophies In “Room 25”

There are artists that are tied to time, and other artists that are tied to “taste.” For instance, certain musicians feel anchored to a year or an era, while other artists feel drawn to a culture, an aesthetic, or their series of philosophies. Noname is that latter; aiming to give her creation/ debut to the world, Room 25, and, like Heaven say “Lay dominion over it!”

Sonically, this album grasps the playfulness and richness of her poesy, which is why her mixtape, Telefone, became so massive. Noname is like an optimistic cynic; well aware of all that is going wrong in this world, but unbelievably brightened by the few things that go well and the hope they go farther. Her balance of positivity is infectious, and waves over Room 25 to confirm what we all knew about her; this woman is a spiritual intellectual. She can, easily, be a Millennial ambassador for Oprah’s Own Network; showing that the youth are not numb to life/the globe, but, instead, are trying to figure new ways to humanly behave and think. Luckily, Noname has the verbosity, rapidity, and cool, soft-speech to serve fresh ideas.

Noname lulls and cusps her flows like a dove in her hand, and releases them knowing that they will be remembered and spread in peace. You feel more than just “chill” with her, you feel serene. She overflows her verses like waterfalls of calm that make you strangely absorbent to thoughts and theories that, if said by another, would fall flat. Thus, the key to Noname is her capacity to rap/speak with such a celestial, you feel like Peter when Jesus said, “Put down the sword.” Yet, Noname adds the followups of that phrase through this overall album. In essence, she is saying, “Pick up your pen. Pick Up Your Voice. Pick Up Your Power.”

“Don’t Forget About Me,” “Regal,” “Ace,” “Self,” and pretty much this whole album are a testament that the best thing to counter self-destructiveness/ this world’s destruction is to create. Make yourself into someone that makes things: not destroys them. Like Noname, be a builder offering the world a new taste of thought that goes beyond measured as stylistically pleasing or not to be a question of whether it is you!
