Artist Close Up: Perry Serpa Asks Wherefore Art Thou?

If you seen my review of Juliet, Naked, then you know it is a lovelorn tale about two people trying to make better romantic choices, despite feeling weathered by the ones they have already done. Lead character Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke) is a legendary rockstar surrounded by myths over his disappearance: with claims that his public retreat was sparked by heartbreak from his ex, Juliet. Perry Serpa has written an album in homage to Nick Hornby’s Juliet, Naked, with the album, Wherefore Art Thou.

We all have a “Juliet” because we have all been the Romeo chasing someone that was not supposed to be for us. In this perspective, Perry’s songwriting oscillates like a heart swimming against romantic currents. He grasps the smallness and majesty of love, and how it can make us love and know someone so much that even “Dirty Dishes” spark a billion memories of your relationship. Perry’s lyricism is poignant and has no problem clearly waltzing into the shadings of love, as seen by tracks “Adultery” and ‘“You and Your Perfect Life.” Moreover, like literature, he understands that, to a romanced character, no detail is irrelevant when it comes to love.

While this album was made for fun and the love of creativity, it is far from a trite effort. Even Nick Hornby declared Perry’s writing, “Magnificent. I love every song, words and music. I’m happy to think that my book has somehow produced work this good. It works completely on its own terms, and sounds complete in a way that very few albums do anymore.” Frankly, I am unsurprised. Perry’s has created a music career that is not just telling of his intelligence and prosperity but also his compassion. Some say, writers are the most empathetic beings you will ever meet, and Perry Serpa’s Wherefore Art Thou is proof. For More Information on Perry Serpa Click Here.
