Concert Review: Courtship Courts Happiness At Rough Trade
Watching Courtship at Rough Trade, I kept on thinking of the Steve Martin/ Dan Akroyd skit, of “We are two wild and crazy guys.” Of course, Courtship are NOTHING like a pair of nerdy pimps from the 70’s, but their friendship is based off of mutual silliness and talent. They feel like two people that found each other in a party where they felt outcasted. As they walked around, grabbed a beer, pretended to be texting someone they knew, and stared at the hoards of people that knew each other, they bumped into each other, struck up a conversation about the new Star Wars, and became best friends.

Yes, at Rough Trade, Courtship delivered “best friend” music. I am not talking about the Billie Eilish songs where you look at your best girlfriend and mutually acknowledge each other’s Ocean Eyes of pain, nor am I talking about Ariana Grande”I don’t need a man” empowerment or SZA giving you vibes to get a boo. I am talking the blast the radio, sing along, and, immediately, pretend you are at a pool party in California songs. They reminded me of the early 2000’s pop sound frame that shelled out harmless lyrics and happy melodies; where even sadness felt as quick and as painless as chewing gum. Hence, their show was a reminder that you can be simple and fine.

As Micah Gordon and Eli Hirsch bantered with each other and the crowd, the laughters and dancing filled the air with a good energy that was comparable to a bunch of balloons wrapped to the ceiling: flying with color and childish glee. From “Number One” to “Amy. Run For the Hills,” Courtship were a genuine blast and reminded audience members that “not thinking” does not, necessarily, mean mindless. Sure! No philosophical forums are going to be started from their songs as simple chords and verses are their general base. BUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT! For them, if you lose your thoughts in the moment, you only feel bigger about it. For More Information On Courtship Click Here.
