Concert Review: Courtship Survive Bad Luck To Give Fun Times At Bowery
Courtship ended their tour at Bowery Ballroom as if they were the leading band at a wedding. That night they were marrying life after a rather unlucky streak of events. The happy-go-lucky duo got sick, got robbed, and got stranded throughout their tour, but somehow arrived to the literal end and figurative conclusion; it takes hard work to have a good time.
The thing I love most about Courtship is that they love making music and performing, and you can tell. They drink a crowd’s cheers like they are water bottles left for them on the stage. This could be why they were bopping around to their songs as if not even The Devil, himself, could have stopped them from showing up, which he might as well have. As they laughed off the hiccups of touring, they seemed so bright and positive, which matched well for songs like, “Stop For Nothing”, “Bad Fun”, and “Love For Everyone”. Each song was about persevering enough to laugh again, and the message lit up like a firework display.
Positivity and “feeling good” are not the easiest things to promote or enact without seeming sappy or silly. Yet, Courtship live for those words. Both Eli Hirsch [guitar, vocals] and Micah Gordon [keyboard, vocals] laminate their lyrics with a glossing vocality. Their notes are clear and shiny as if they were turning their verses into licenses for joy. Such a dynamic spruced up the crowd, and made me cheer for and understand how Hirsch and Gordon could survive such bad luck. When you know you are doing what you love, you are more motivated to overcome what you do not.
From “Tell Me Tell Me” to “Perfect People”, these guys are assuring they rise to become a fun act to watch. They are not about getting deep as much as feeling light, and, nowadays, more people need to feel as such. For More Information On Courtship Click Here.
