Concert Review: Divino Niño Are My Grateful Dead
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Divino Niño, by all means, are a jam band. They had so many instrumental suites, they could have opened up a hotel. (pun intended!) Yet, the result was a show that people would go to again; making a live jam feel like a repeatable quest.
I have always been fascinated by The Grateful Dead and their fandom of “Dead-Heads” because I cannot imagine traveling the across the country, for years, to follow someone unless they were my rich husband. Yet, Divino Niño’s set sailed on by like a yacht holding a bunch of Brooklynites with their local brews and neon beanies. They felt like our Grateful Dead, and proved a a group of good guys “bro-ing” and warming up the audience is good enough to be great. Their personalities combined with their talent to show me why someone would follow a particular jam.

There was absolutely no pretentiousness to them. From song to spirit, they felt like your little brother and his friends rocking out in your garage, except they were actually good. (Sorry, brother!) It is hard to convey the importance of their casualness in solidifying their fans and making them ones to see again and again. Something about letting an instrument play is hypnotizing; whether it is guitar/ bass waning through for minutes like the moon or a drum rolling down like a kicked rock on a mountain. Thus, their songs felt like fun mantras; ones that did not ask you to break into a yoga pose while getting your coffee. Instead, you could just listen, sway, and feel like a hippie with swag. That may not seem like the dream to some, but it is the core ideal of a Deadhead or a “Divinoer.”

It is not easy to make accessible look cool or make a song sound imaginative yet humble. We attribute bigness and complexity to exclusivity, but Divino Niño were vast and virtuous. Their music creates an atmosphere that makes grabbing a beer with friends and listening to them play feel like the wealthiest move for those looking to be happy.
