Concert Review: EL Guincho Delivers Spain To NYC At Le Poisson Rouge

When Le Poisson Rouge said Spain is coming to NYC, my blood ignited with the idea of listening to my native heartbeat. Spanish Music has dominated my life, and El Guincho dominated my night by reminding me the natural fun of my Spaniard roots. With a quick flare and a pop beat, Guincho showed that Spain could do as well, if not, much better something than America in something believes it owns: pop music.

Now I am not starting a war between Spain and The U.S. for pop domination, but latin pop artists, at times, struggle to build the bridge between Latinx culture and sounds with that of pop music’s heart. For El Guincho, he has found a connection with Pop’s essence through the sugar-rush of energy that is laced in its rhythms. Playing a range of songs from his near 10 year career. With his supernatural blend of rock n’ roll, tropical, and electronica,  the night felt like someone had given the crowd a batch of pixie-sticks and mountain dews to then ask us to display our moves in a pageant show. Yes, that is an elaborate image, but El Guincho is an elaborate personality. He displays music like it were a model, excitedly, walking the runway to impress us all. For us, the audience, we applaud, jump, and cheer as she walks upon us in high fashion. El Guincho is meticulous in every beat he courses by drizzling an element of psychedelia over it. There is always a little “peach fuzz” or “chocolate drop” in his chords/ keys that assure, if anything, his pop sound proves music can be a drug in candied form.

Think of El Guincho’s show like a lollipop- hallucinogen. The more you lick into its “cherried” flavors/ songs, the more you find yourself seeing visions. Not to mention, El Guincho or Pablo Díaz-Reixa is an excellent front-man. He the man of “every party”, of which everyone agrees that once he enters “La Fiesta empieza!”. Thus, El Guincho showed that pop music may be about love and fun, but it is also about fast paces and imagination. Pop music makes you feel revitalized, by making you feel like life is brisk wind worth catching, and El Guincho is DEFINITELY worth catching. For More Information On El Guincho Click Here.
