Concert Review: Emily King Is Daddy’s Girl At The Shed
It only took 3-4 songs to for Emily King to leave the entire audience impacted. Having seen her at the Apollo Theater, I was SHOOK by her ability to make every performance different. Excitingly, she never sings a song the same, and as she crooned hits like “Distance” and “Remind Me,” she riveted as a representation of all that Black music has come through and where it will go.
For the Soundtrack of America series, artists were hand-picked by Quincy Jones to sing the songs, both originals and covers, that inspired them. The goal was to represent black history, in sorrow and spirit, as a musical tour-de-force. Naturally, King excelled because her voice is so unique. The minute she begins a note your heart says, “What is that? Can I hear more?” Hence, it was nice to see the heartfelt singer bring out her own her heart: her dad.
Emily King – Look At Me Now (Live at Apogee Studios)Welp! It is official! Emily King is a Daddy’s Girl! When her father came out, the already smiley songstress beamed. While all we saw was a distinguished man stroll out to the stage, for her, it was like watching her hero come out in a cloud. As they spoke about the legendary black songwriters/ immigrants that moved them, I realized how important music is as a teaching tool for parents. Her love and appreciation for black history and rise as a black songstress was born from her parents: whom taught her music is a time capsule as much as it is emotional catharsis. Hence, as she performs, she sings songs like they are the memories of feelings; sonic documentaries of how your heart broke and mended when another did not love your right.
Emily King – Distance (Official Music Video)What I love about Emily King is that she sings to those that have been loved wrongly. It is not simply that he was evil or she was cruel, but that our ex-partner was not right. He/she did not fit what we needed or wanted for ourselves, and, for some, that might be a sadder truth than simple heartbreak. For More Information On Emily King Click Here.
