Concert Review: Emily King Is Praised At Apollo Theater

Emily King was legendary at Apollo Theater. As New Yorkers were stunned by the random, Snowpocalypse that brought our city to a sliding halt, King’s voice was like Starbucks had come in to give everyone free, hot chocolate. This is important because The Apollo Theater is notoriously known for being a theater that tell you if you are great or if you suck.

Lauryn Hill got booed at The Apollo, and Aretha Franklin became a legend here, which shows you “the greats” understood Apollo is more than a music venue; it is a music jury. Thus, Emily King was so smitten with the crowd’s love, which gushed forward as if someone had decided to do open heart surgery and never closed it. Love was all over the place. Enough for patrons to get up, dance in between aisles, and yell things like, “You are perfect, Emily!” and “Take us to church, Emily!” Frankly, the latter felt like a befitting statement because Emily was giving us Holy Promised Land vocals.

If someone had told me Emily King was Jesus little sister, Emily King- Christ, I would say, “I see the resemblance.” The insanity of her voice is that it redefines power into softness. Yes, she can hit a high note like a dove landing on a cloud. Yet, for the most part, her range is the pure mist that builds one. Introducing several new songs from her next album, Scenery out February 9, the audience was shook! If she had decided to sell that album at the march table, every single person would have bought it. Her new work feels like one more step towards an infallible truth; Emily King is one of the most talented songstresses in the industry. Moreover, her performance solidified that the emotions she makes you feel on record are even more validated when live.
Emily King – Distance (Official Music Video)

Never in my life have I seen someone wipe their brow and spark an audience’s gasp in pleasure. Emily took off her shoe, and the crowd was screamed, “YAAAAASSSS!” Let me try that move at a Payless, and see if I get half the excitement. It was surreally wonderful to see how much everyone appreciated her, and how much it was deserved. The way Emily dances, emotes, and riffs earned her praise hands for new tracks “Teach Me,” “Go Back,” and “Forgiveness.” She had mentioned how her father had come to The Apollo to see James Brown. which put pressure on her to live up to his first experience. Yet, when her parents stood up, the entire crowd gave them an ovation as if they had struck the winning goal at The World Cup. Emily King made everyone feel proud that a humble soul is living a life where its main mission is to sing to love. #blessed For More Information On Emily King Click Here.
