Concert Review: I LOVE EMOTIONAL ORANGES At Webster Hall
Emotional Oranges will forever be one of the best show I have ever seen. They never fail to provide a show that is so cool like wearing a fabulous coat with dark shades and diamonds. Their music feels like fashion as if R&B rhythms could be worn, which is not a stretch. Music often becomes a culture that can be worn through fashion, spoken through phrases, and socialized through impact. At Webster Hall, Emotional Oranges were the impact. #sadfruit
EVEN THEIR WHOLE CONCEPT IS SO CHIC! As they juiced through hits such as, “Hold You Back” and “You’re Best Friend Is A Hater,” as if they were making a sonic smoothie, they embodied, for me, internet culture. They move across the stage with the mystery and aesthetic that is a trend; you watch to hear their lyrical commentary without ever knowing the original story. In essence, Emotional Oranges are all about presentation. They hand you the music, you scroll through it, and decide how you are the source for their original content.
I said it with Doja Cat and Lil Nas X, and I say it with Emotional Oranges; some artists truly know how to capture social media. They create songs that are destined to be TikTok loops and bound for Instagram reels, in part, because they understand the fun, silliness, and loveliness of this generation. We really do want to have a blast, drink some Iced Coffee, and put Climate Change Is Real on our bios as we promote Shein fashion hauls. We are walking clashes and conundrums veiled in youthful fabulosity, and Emotional Oranges are the total essence of that. They drove songs such as, “Bonafide,” “Personal,” or their remixes of “I Need A Girl” and “Killing Me Softly” like, luxury cars and made lust and heartbreak tools of finesse.
Okay, I’m gushing! Yet, I REALLY LIKE EMOTIONAL ORANGES! I know, as I speak, I sound like I am talking about fruit with feelings, but, at their show, it was like I was a giant plum of happy sentiments. It was so genuinely nice to feel like life could be a slick adventure and that people’s swag had returned “post-pandemic.” With lighting and shades even the dark, Emotional Oranges made their crowd feel emotionally uplifted.
