Concert Review: James Hersey Shows The Fun of Love At Webster Hall

It’s a good thing that right after you perform I feel like buying you a beer. Playing the New York circuit is like doing a musical version of a bar crawl. You are bound to hit lounges upon lounges, bars upon bars, and concert halls upon concert halls with each serving beer. Yes I know this is a concert review of the lovable James Hersey, but feeling like he can walk off the stage after a stellar performance, have a beer with you, and tell you all about his international life is what makes Hersey a great concert choice.
James Hersey – Miss You (Official Video)

From “Everyone’s Talking” to “Miss You”, Hersey played what seemed to be hit after hit. Despite little radio play, I found myself singing the chorus by heart at the second listen. The catchiness of Hersey’s music truly amps up in his concert, and makes you want to call every station demanding his music. While his recording emanates his lyrical thoughtfulness and even folkish blues at pining and piercing himself for love, in concert, he has more of a pop flare and a firm, debonair style, which is why I could not help but want all his music. Again, I reiterate the importance of both wanting his music and feeling like he is a person you can hang out with because they are both interconnected. Hersey’s aura on stage in confident and friendly, which makes sense considering he wore a pink, flowered shirt. What mean person have you met wearing a pink-flowered shirt? Moreover, for the few moments of conversation he had with the public, you felt he had so much to say. This could be, in part, because his lyrics bring a poesy to pop music that would be found in a Walt Whitman passage rather than a Britney track. Although I love my Brit Brit, “Hit Me Baby One More Time” is not exactly a romantic poem to spark love as much as a club phrase born from lust. Thus, Hersey’s ability to bring the fun of pop with the nuance of poetry made his concert feel like a breath of fresh air to the NY music circuit. Plus, his voice is as rich and warm as nice cup of hot chocolate in the NYC cold.
James Hersey – Everyone’s Talking – Vevo dscvr (Live)

Hersey’s voice like, his music, sounds different live than on recording, which is great. I felt like I was meeting the “second” Hersey. The first one is cool, moodier and into the sulks of love, yet the ”second, concert” one is still cool, but happier and in the the silks of passion. Hersey bounces around the stage and approaches the mic with a glee that one would feel when they saw something new and wonderful, which to a musician is the crowd. After all, Hersey may not change, but as he tours, a new crowd will appear to re-spark, every night, his already fresh take on love. And I KNOW that crowd will only grow in time.
