Concert Review: FKA Twigs Is Magdalene At Red Bull Music Fest
If there is one thing that Red Bull Music Fest (RBMF) has done well and distinguishably, it is to offer its artists the chance to have a concept. Each act has been given the opportunity to not only perform but create a performance piece. From sets to costuming or themes to moral messages, RBMF is as much a theatrical occasion as it is a concert, and FKA Twigs rendition of Magdalene was proof.
Mary Magdalene has been written both historically and religiously as one of the most devout, loving followers of Jesus. Whether such a bond became a sexual is for you to decide, but FKA Twigs sultry, avant-garde interpretation of this iconic figure was gorgeous and emanating of romantic loyalty. When someone is good to you, it does make you feel better about yourself. Their capacity to show you kindness, in a world that deems you unworthy of it, opens your heart and spirit enough to open your body. Thus, FKA Twigs ,with the power to turn pole dancing into an artful ballet and enough costume changes to make Lady Gaga say, “Slow Down,” showed that it is the loyalty of love that makes it a show worth watching.
As a performer, Red Bull Music Fest gave FKA Twigs the production and creative license to display how talented she is as a person. I had no idea she could tap or sword dance, and the way she moved her body and voice with precise lightness was so organic. She peeled away any sonic preservative or “GMO” that taints the raw beauty of seeing someone turn themselves into a masterpiece. The crowd was mesmerized, in part, because we only expected a concert. Yet, if my time with Rosalia showed me anything, it is that RBMF brings a slight Broadway feel to the pop world. Hence, its participating artists can show their vision as much as their sound. FKA Twigs gave a show that was inspiring and impressive. She stapled that she is an unmissable artist because she gives a fulfilling concert experience. The way she was able to match her own hits such as, “Water” and “Cellophane,” with the story of Magdalene was stunningly creative, and only Red Bull Music Fest gives such a platform.
