Concert Review: Rosalía Stuns At Red Bull Music Fest

Rosalía gave a STUNNING performance, Night 2, of the Red Bull Music Fest. With the Redbull logo subtly splashed throughout the Webster Hall venue, it was a cool, gentile reminder that this energy drink is what is offering you this energized performance. From production to sheer pizzazz, RBMF has stepped up its game and Rosalía “flamancoed” all over it.

Watching Rosalía, I kept on thinking of that girl in high-school that did every extracurricular activity. From theater to water polo, “that girl” did it all, which made Rosalía’s taking of the stage feel destined and righteous. Rosalía has more energy than 20 men combined, and she has fascinating capacity to scope her range as if it were a landscape meant to be excavated for originality. Playing off her new album, Make Querer, I had not, fully, realized how much success  that entire record has garnered. Everyone knew every song, which is a good sign for the heights she will achieve. 

Rosalía really is a natural born star, which made the emotionality of her performance feel brilliant. You know that you are at a fierce festival and a stupendous performer when massive pop stars, like Dua Lipa, enter to see you. Stars coming out for stars. What!!!!!!! Yet, Rosalía matches sentimentality with coolness and vision. She feels like The Empress leapt our of a tarot card and was eager to join The Lovers one. It is absolutely admirable how she uses image, sound, and choreography to spark mysticism into Latin pop. Thanks to RBFM, she was given a stage that made an “arena quality” performance feel accessible to the everyday concert-goer.

In NYC, an after-work concert is everything; something that Rosalía acknowledge as she thanked her people for showing up. Although she is from Spain, every Latino and Spanish speaking New Yorker was their to support her: even tossing red roses at her feet. Her selection as a headliner for Red Bull Music Fest spoke to the festival’s desire to seek out the uniquest stars, from various cultures, to both represent their people and introduce themselves to new listeners.
