Concert Review: Freya Ridings Builds Love Castles At Bowery

As Freya Ridings serenaded her Bowery Ballroom crowd, I kept on thinking of intelligence. Maybe, it was her British accent that made her seem poised and smart because Americans LOVE a UK dialect. Yet, I think it was how her voice felt like an angel on a mission by God to discover what it means to be in a “couple.” 

It is a beautiful image; Heaven trying to looking upon earthly love. I imagine up there love comes easy because there are no worries or bills. Yet, that is the point of Freya’s music; with all that happens on earth, you have to fight to keep love in it. In perspective, life is a crazy ride, and tracks like, “You Mean the World to Me,” “Castles,” “Unconditional” and a brilliant cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Maps,” sang to every individual’s valiant attempt to assure their relationships remain stable and loving. As a songwriter, Ridings’ treats romance like a safety-hatch that you escape through during the world’s chaos. Hence, her show is simply gorgeous; hypnotizing viewers with her aerial voice. 

Vocally, Ridings is light and feathered with an operatic style. Some audience members compared her to Adele or Sarah Maclachlan in her ability to warm your heart up to love again. Freya makes you want to experience the love she sings about, which is such a beautiful impact. Though there are many love songs to adore; not every track makes you dream that real love is fantastical enough. You do not need a magic carpet ride to take you through the desert or  long hair for your prince to climb a massive tower. Having somebody on the other side of apartment door, ready to eat a microwaveable meal, and as excited as you are to catch The Bachelor is a modern fairytale.
