Concert Review: Future Thieves Steal Hearts At Mercury Lounge NYC
I had heard great things about Future Thieves as performers before seeing their Mercury Lounge show. Yet, like anyone ,when someone else hypes up a show for you; it can make you nervous. Yet, similar to Monakr, Future Thieves make every song feel like a final opus you have written to you own life. If songs were moving, “hopefully goodbye” letters to every unhappiness you have ever known, then Future Thieves are the keeper of said songs.
With lights flashing around as if the tunnels to Heaven were opening up. Future Thieves use their guitars like beacons calling everyone to take form. Tracks like “On The Run”, “Horizon Line” and “Ghosts” literally embrace the idea that life is something to form. From relationships to perspectives, everything your are is made; the question is whether ti made by you or someone else? How you make or break yourself comes up in songs like “Online” or “Sucker”, which, again, elaborate that Future Thieves’ sound was made for a raucous observance on how we shine and smear ourselves across life. Hence, it makes sense that Future Thieves would play with such fervor. They jump and shake their instruments like a child would shake a toy bank; expecting money and trinkets to fall out. The “money” being arrangements made to seem final in contrast to lyrics that are all about feeling finite. Enter lead singer Elliot Collett as the epic voice emanating fragile states.
If someone told me that Elliot Collett’s voice was sculpted from some mythical Greek boulder by Zeus, himself, I would believe it. His vocal chords feel like raw, rocks being thrown as words and sentiments. We all have had the “Loneliest Times”, “Nightmares” or felt like our relationships were on “The floor”. Yet, despite these effects, the causes are not always clear or connected to some grander theme. Part of what makes Future Thieves such an electro/ electric rock band is that they elaborate how, sometimes, you feel lost or bored with life because that is how you feel. There is not “great” explanation beyond the fact that being human means feeling as bad, at times, as you feel good. Yet, Future Thieves are all about feeling good and I fell in love with this band as persons and music. These Nashville guys may have brought Southern wit and hospitality to NYC, but they gave a universal vibe to every concert-goer. Moreover, they were simple fun. No one can beat rock n’ roll when its served with a good time. For More Information On Future Thieves Click Here.
