Concert Review: Gorgon City Become A Band At Avant Gardner

Transitioning from a DJ duo to a five piece set, Gorgon City went from premier DJs to one of the best bands you will ever see live. Seeing them awhile ago, the transformation was unexpected but gloriously welcomed. In perspective, it seems like a perfect fit that the duo creating and producing the backdrops for top artists could make a band for top venues like, Avant Gardner.

I mentioned it with SG Lewis, and I will say it again with Gorgon City; when you bring vocalists to your DJ set, you literally bring the birthday cake to the party. It is as if you have taken the highlight of your song and made it a live-action epicenter. With Chenai and Josh Barry as lead singers, Gorgon City amplified that the E in their EDM stands for empowerment. They felt like beating hearts on the stage; guiding the audience through their “Gorgon Citied” night. Moreover, both soulful singers added a humanity to Gorgon City’s songs that already can make you feel like a Superman, of which their voices reminded you he was also Clark Kent.

I had mentioned, in my album review, that Gorgon City’s Kingdom played as if it was trying to ignite every foot soldier to aim to be a king. Sonically, it balanced heavy baselines with aerial snares and synths like a castle of brick and mortar held by a floating cloud. This dynamic zipped up the energy of their show; allowing the crowd the embrace the darkness of life and elevate it into lightness. With their typical machine-like lights and images bouncing around, along with black beach balls being tosses into the crowd, the experience was full sensory. Your inner child had finally grown into the adult it always thought it would be.

Concerts are a strange experience because you can have unexpected, sincere moments of wisdom. Yet, it makes sense because music is the food of the soul. As lovers and friends climbed each others shoulder to create a dancing tower or people broke into break-dancing, I was reminded of why kids want to grow up. To a child’s eyes, shows like Gorgon City are what “adulting” is about. Dancing, drinking, and being happy and openly silly without adult supervision. In essence, Gorgon City’s show proved empowerment is about going wild and trusting that it is all in love and inclusive fun. For More Information On Gorgon City Click Here.
