Concert Review- Haiku Hands Are My Spice Girls And I Love Them
Yes, I was a fan of The Spice Girls. I may have been a baby when the craze began, but I enjoyed their lollipops with their faces as stickers. I had a VHS of one of the best, worst movies of all time, Spice World, and I tried to be Ginger Spice for a Halloween but ended up looking like an actual spice that had tipped over from a pantry rack. Yes, Girl Power hit “baby me” very hard, but it was invigorating, of which, now as a young woman, I look for a female group that makes me feel like a bad bitch. Luckily, Haiku Hands are here to save the day.

At Avant Gardner, the group went OFF. They were LIT! Telling the crowd to say “F**k Off” to haters, bad energy, and any level of darkness trying to shroud their light. They did splits, jumped into the crowd, and created dance moves that could have become dance crazes, and they did it all in the name of Woman Power. Suddenly, my inner Baby Diandra Reviews did a flashback, and I felt like life was a dollhouse waiting for me to do soap operas with Barbies and carpool karaoke on my way to karate class. Somehow, this group of Aussies had transferred Girl Power into Woman Power, and reminded adult that feeling like a kid is necessary.

Sometimes, you need to do a high kick, call yourself a bad bitch, and wear a Halloween mask for no reason beyond the fact that you want to. Claire Nakazawa, Mie Nakazawa, and Beatrice Lewis did that at Avant Gardner and it was exhilarating because they felt free. Part of going to the club and hitting the dancefloor is that you want a sense of liberation, which is not be confused with escapism. You want to feel like there is this part of you that goes beyond your everyday life; a bit of your soul that only a good beat, a delicious cocktail, and a best friend could ever know. Haiku Hands tapped into that, and they did it with a Beastie Boy level of tenacity.
