Concert Review: The Head And The Heart Close Out Alt 92.3’s Summer Open.

At Forest Hills Stadium, Alt 92.3’s Summer Open was surprisingly chill and even “hippie-ish.” With openers Fits And The Tantrums and Young The Giant, the mood was set for Head And The Heart. People were, clearly, there to feel a spiritual rejuvenation. Nearly every act sung to “keep on trying” or “it get better” campaigns, of which The Head And The Heart DOMINATE such dynamics.

I knew this concert was an elevated space because people were protective of their joy. A man, literally, ran into a woman, spilled his beer on her romper, and never apologized. Meanwhile, she shrugged and kept on singing to The Head And The Heart. She remained unfazed and jovial, which was a feeling everyone had. Phones lit up and hand swayed through the air as the group sang tracks such as, “See You Through My Eyes,” “Sounds Like Hallelujah,” “Missed Connection” and “Ghosts.” As Jonathan Russell, Charity Rose Thielen, and Josiah Johnson harmonized and interchanged vocals, their songs became hope-builders and their voice three lights guiding you to them.

From “Another Story” to “Rivers And Roads,” The Head And The Heart were a “feel good” concert; playing to inexplicable joy. Have you ever had that? A moment when you did not know why you were happy, but did not question it out of a fear that to ask is to challenge your joy. Everyone was happy, and their lyrics asked them to simply keep in that state. Your heart knows what you need and, if you let it, then it will provide. Thus, between hand-claps and sing-alongs The Head And The Heart felt like a Christian- Rock band without the Christianity (lol!).

A concert is a spiritual experience, and the best artist realizes that. Yet, spirituality is not, necessarily, about God. It is about the belief that humanity’s best is good enough to keep faith in. For The Head And The Heart, our best is love, laughter, and life. While those words are the epicenter of every Hallmark card, sometimes, the “cliche” is truth, and, for this group, belief in love is a “cliche” that is a must.
